CBT Thought Diary PDF
“Many abused children cling to the hope that growing up will bring escape and freedom.
But the personality formed in the environment of coercive control is not well adapted to adult life. The survivor is left with fundamental problems in basic trust, autonomy, and initiative. She approaches the task of early adulthood――establishing independence and intimacy――burdened by major impairments in self-care, in cognition and in memory, in identity, and in the capacity to form stable relationships.
She is still a prisoner of her childhood; attempting to create a new life, she reencounters the trauma.”
Judith Lewis Herman

The beginning of wisdom is the ability to call things by their proper names.
Confucius
This quote hit me so hard. I read it in a book about families with alcoholism, just after I came across my dysfunctional role in the book.
I was stunned and really sad. What I thought were my ‘personality traits’ were more like adaptations that I used in order to survive… & a lot of them were destroying me.
Needless to say I went and got my first (& only) tattoo.
“The Placater”
But, identifying the problem was just the beginning. Since then I have had years of CBT therapy, group therapy & read quite a few books about dysfunctional thought patterns. It’s all been worth it.
“Abuse is never contained to a present moment, it lingers across a person’s lifetime and has pervasive long-term ramifications.”

“Emotional abuse can leave a victim feeling like a shell of a person, separated from the true essence of who they naturally are. It also leads to a victim feeling tormented and tortured by their own emotions.”
